I'm going to be doing the body work on my car and need tips on making the job a little easier. I need to get a air compressor but need to know what specs to look for and I'm getting a harbor freight paint gun. I'm doing the body work and then shooting it with a primer but which primer do yall reccommend for shooting the whole body before base coat or should I go with a sealer. First time job all help appreciated. And what filler is reccomended?

You need a air compressor that can keep up with the cfm requirements of the gun. Three coats of any high build primer should be ok since your gonna sand the hell out of it. Dont know too much about fillers.

1. youd be good with a 60 gall with a 6hp motor on it.
2. fill then seal!
3. make sure u get the filler with more talc/talk(sp)..less shrinkage(meaning after the primer dries then you wont see sand scratches that werent there b4(to keep it simple).
4. then b4 you seel it wet sand with 400..depending on how good you spray youll have lots of orange peel using a the gun your choosing make sure you get it all(when you wet sand it)
5. then seal it the best sealer is ppgs dp sealer. get the mixing instructions because you can use it as just a epoxy or as a sealer.

my advice on the sprayguns if you want to go inexpensive. go to your nearest paint store and they should have a 3 gun kit for like 125...there is a primer gun w/ a 1.8 tip on it.. a paint/clear gun w/a 1.4 on it and a touch up gun. this should help your job come out better than using one gun for everything.

Ok let me make sure I understand. I do my body work, filler, wet sand with 400 grit, then seal. What would I sand with next before painting? How many coats of sealer will I need?

400 before you seal. you seal when you paint. so after u mask the car for the last time u seal, sealer dries and u paint. i like 2-3 coats, enough to get the car one color

Where does the primer come in at?

2 places there is filler primer which is what you are sanding with 400(depending how well you have completed your body work, guide coat helps, it comes in a spray can and you just spray it on and wet sand it off. ask the person that sells it to you how to spray it) and there is primer sealer which you put on before you paint

Ok so when I lay down the primer sealer do I sand it before I paint? I'm using around 3 coats of base and probably 3 coats of clear but should I sand before clear and when I'm done clearing should I wet sand and buff and just use a pure polish and poilsh it? Trying to get the best results I can with this being my firs job and it's going on my daily.

after you wet sand with the 400 you dont have to sand anymore..use a sealer as close to the color that you are painting the car. you dont have to sand your base. if your going to wet sdand your car and want the best result then I would go with a really good clear. dont wet sand it until its all the way cured. the easiest way with your wet sanding is to cross sand it with 2000 grit wet. for cutting i like 3m cutting compound. then i go to the 3m swirl mark remover, and then the polishing compound. then with final inspection. LOTTA WORK! i hope what ive been telling you has helped you out!

Yea it has helped me out a lot but by cross sanding you mean? Everything else I pretty much got down and I'm going to be ready to paint as soon as I have all my materials and when I do paint I will post pics of my progress in a thread or maybe this one.

cross sanding is when you go more than one direction sanding..... so if you start goin right to left then you switch to left to fight. and you go diagnol right to left and diagnol left to right... so that you get all of the orange peel off evenly.. it doesnt have to be in this order but thats what it is.
